Goals of the DCS

The Deutsche Chirurgiestiftung is committed to education and training and to improving the situation of scientists and doctors in the public eye, particularly in relation to the state, universities, healthcare institutions and the media. It also supports appropriate, internationally competitive research and working conditions for scientists, doctors and, in particular, surgeons and surgery-related professions in Germany. It pays particular attention to the next generation of scientists and doctors in order to maintain and expand the field of surgery. It aims to help reduce family-related disadvantages in scientific and/or medical careers.

In order to give doctors, private individuals, healthcare facilities and companies the opportunity to make a solidary, visible and lasting commitment to the strengthening and further development of surgery in science and practice, Prof. Dr mult. Ulrich Joos and MIB GmbH Medizin-Information & Beratung, together with other founding donors, established the German Surgical Foundation as a non-profit funding organisation. The aim of the foundation's funding is to retain the best minds in surgery in Germany in order to regain and consolidate the outstanding position of the past in international competition.

The German Surgical Foundation aims to maintain the high quality of nationwide surgical care by:
  • Enthusiasm and promotion of young people for surgery
  • Promotion of practical medicine and applied research that is geared towards the needs of the population
  • Promotion of all professions related to surgery
To realise this, DCS operates the International Medical College (www.med-college.de) Here, modern blended learning concepts are used to intensively promote both practical surgical application techniques and theoretical principles with the help of the e-med learning platform.

The DCS also pursues other objectives:
  • Support and promotion of the training of experts in the field of legal/medical disputes for the preparation of court reports
  • Quality improvement and assurance of psychological and medical expert reports in the legal system
  • Improvement in public transfer and protection of affected parties through greater transparency, traceability and scientific rigour in the appraisal process
To this end, the DCS has founded the Competence Centre for Expert Opinions in Law, Psychology and Medicine www.kompetenz-rpm.de. The competence centre is under the patronage of the Bavarian Ministry of Justice.
