20th Muenster Spring Symposium - the tried and tested and the new

The 20th Muenster Spring Symposium took place on 23 February 2013 under the patronage of the German Surgical Foundation. Once again, over 1000 dentists attended the event at the Halle Münsterland Congress Centre. This year's theme was "The tried and tested and the new". After their presentations, the high-calibre speakers offered the opportunity for discussion at a round table. The tried-and-tested industry exhibition allowed dentists to exchange ideas during the break.

Fascination of Surgery" congress

On 20/21 September 2013, the German Surgical Foundation held the "Fascination of Surgery" specialist congress for the third time, this time also integrating the 9th Autumn Symposium on Dentistry with the topic of Tumour Surgery" As part of this year's Fascination Surgery conference, the Ruth Erwig Innovation Prize was for the first time in the amount of 5000 euros for special innovative surgical achievements. The prize was awarded for an exceptional new surgical procedure for spleen resection in spherical cell anaemia. The winner of the award is PD Dr Gerhard Stöhr, Head of the Department of General, Visceral and Paediatric Surgery at Marienhospital Bottrop. Globular cell anaemia is the most common inherited haemolytic anaemia. The German Surgical Foundation also supports the final study with € 15,000. Following the award ceremony, the round table discussion, which also took place as part of the Fascination of Surgery conference, dealt with transplant surgery - also from the point of view of "Fewer donations only penalise those on the organ waiting lists". Participants in the discussion were Prof. Körfer, Director of the Duisburg Heart Centre, Prof. Schmidt, Transplantation Officer at the University of Muenster, Dieter Kemmerling, entrepreneur and organ donation activist, and Prof. Schmid, Director of the Institute of Pathology and Neuropathology at the University of Essen. Ursel Sieber, a medical journalist, moderated the lively discussion among all participants.

Training events

The 1st Visceral Surgery and Thoracic Surgery Workshop took place from 31 October 2013 to 3 November 2013 at the Semmelweis University, Institute of Anatomy and Pathology in Budapest. The surgical course was characterised by an innovative and unprecedented concept. The training concept was adopted by the Professional Association of German Surgeons in 2014 as part of its training and further education programme .
